New York City skyline with Central Park — iconic Manhattan view

New York City has a reputation as expensive, but an enormous amount of the city's best experiences are completely free. From the world's finest collection of free museums to outdoor concerts, architectural wonders, and vibrant neighborhoods to explore on foot — a full week in NYC can be extraordinarily rich without paying for most entertainment.

World-Class Free Museums

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a pay-what-you-wish policy for New York residents and is a suggested-admission institution for all visitors. The American Museum of Natural History is free on bank of America Museums on Us weekends. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is free Friday evenings (UNIQLO Free Friday Nights, 5:30-9pm). The Brooklyn Museum is free on the first Saturday evening of each month. The Frick Collection and many smaller galleries are free or very low cost. The Staten Island Ferry provides free views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline.

Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Central Park is 843 acres of free green space in the middle of Manhattan — the Great Lawn, Strawberry Fields, Bethesda Fountain, the Ramble bird sanctuary, and dozens of playgrounds are all accessible without charge. The High Line (elevated park built on former rail infrastructure) is free and provides unique views of the Hudson River and West Side. The Brooklyn Bridge walk is free, with iconic views in both directions. The Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City offers some of Manhattan's most stunning waterfront views at zero cost.

Free Cultural Events

SummerStage in Central Park hosts free outdoor concerts from June through September with major artists across genres — concerts have featured Erykah Badu, Yo-Yo Ma, and hundreds of other significant performers at no charge. Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater provides free Shakespeare performances with celebrity casts every summer — tickets are free (distributed by lottery at shakespeareinthepark.org). NYC Parks runs free movies, outdoor fitness classes, and cultural programs year-round.
